MARCO LOBO
Instructor

Born in Bahia, where the drums beat most powerfully, Marco always liked to extract sounds from unusual objects. A professional career was formed by age 14, when he took to the nocturnal circuit of Salvador and played with Abel Lobo and Jorge Zarath, then later with Banda Beijo and Luis Caldas. By then, there was no looking back and he played many carnaval seasons with with Gerônimo, Margareth Menezes, Armandinho, and the trio elétrico Dodô e Osmar.

In his twenties, he made his way to Rio de Janeiro where he resides today. He worked with instrumentalments such as Leo Gandelman and popular singers including Elba Ramalho, Marisa Monte, Ivan Lins, Maria Bethânia, Lenine, Ana Carolina, João Bosco, Gilberto Gil, and Milton Nascimento. Percusionists Papete, Airto Moreira, Naná Vasconcelos, and the Indian Trilok Gurto have been inspirational in illuminating Marco's path. Despite the undeniable importance of these major names and musical gurus, perhaps the central inspiration remains the innumerable and unknown and very natural percussionists on the streets of Bahia.

Marco Lobo's passion is sonic exploration with and beyond traditional instrumentation, aspiring as an artisan of the exotic, experimental, and vibrant. His first solo recording is currently in production.
